Just a small FAQ

All the answers are going to be given in my own words and opinions. Some people may feel different about a few of my answers but this is how I feel.

Q. What is Swedish Snus?

A. Well Swedish Snus is a form of tobacco that comes in a loose (los) or portion that is spitless and smokeless. And from research I have done about 90% safer than cigaretts or dipping.

Q. What is a portion snus?

A. Well a portion snus is finley ground tobacco and flavors put inside a little pouch made out of the same material as a tea bag. The most common size contains 8mg of nicotine.

Q. What is the loose snus?

A. Well loose snus is pretty much the same as the portion snus except it isn't in little pouches. It is loose in the can just like american dip.

Q. What is the difference between a White portion and an original portion.

A. Well a white portion is a dryer portion that usually takes a little longer for you to get flavor out of the snus but the flavor lasts longer.

The original portion is almost the same as a white portion except at the end of the production line it is sprayed with a tobacco juice to make it more moist. This causes them to give flavor much quicker but they also don't last quite as long as a white portion.

The two also use a little different porton material. The white to me is a little more rough than the original portion.

Q. There is so many different flavors what should I try first?

A. This is one hard to answer becasue it all depends on what you like. The best thing to do is read all the reviews of all the ones that catch your interest and pick from there. Forums are also very good places to go many snusers will be glad to help guide you. And you could always ask me here on my blog and I will be glad to help you decide on a good first order.

If you like just a pure tobacco flavor and you are new to snus I suggest Ettan.

If you are more inclined to try a flavored snus first I suggest getting the general Mint mini or General wintergreen.

General original portions is the number one selling snus out of all of them so you can always start there.

Q. The smell is pretty awful do you really put that in your mouth?

A. Yes and most snusers agree don't smell the snus when you are new to it. It taste nothing like it taste for most of them. I have however written a post on snus I think is okay for a snubie to smell you can find that post on this blog.

Q. Where should I place the snus?

A. The upper lip is where you should be placing the snus, this makes it juice up much less therefore no reason to spit.

Q. Why am I not getting much flavor from the snus?

A. Well if you used to smoke it can take about a week for your taste buds to get back to where they can taste all the flavors. If you were not a smoker the portions could be a little to dry and you can place the portion on your tounge first to pre wet it a little before placing it in your lip.

Q. What is your Favorite Snus?

A. Personally right now Thunder Frosted is my favorite snus. It has a lot of nicotine and the flavor lasts and lasts and lasts.

Q. How many portions do you use a day?

A. I use between 4 and 8 portions a day. If I use just thunder frosted probably 4 a day becasue of how much nicotine is in it. If i use regular 8 mg portions i may use 8 a day.

Q. What is the difference between a mini portion and a regular portion.

A. A mini portion for the most part has a lower level of nicotine on average 4-6mg of nicotine vs the 8 of an original portion. However I must note that V2 tobacoo is releasing a mini of there Thunder Frosted which is going to contain 8mg of nicotine.

Q. Where can I find more info about snus?

A. There is some links on the top right of this blog that should contain all the information you could want. If those links don't have all the info you are looking for than I suggest a google search.

Hmm well those are all the question I can think of at the moment if I can make another list up I will have a part 2 of FAQ. If you have any other question you would like to know an answer to just ask and I will get you an answer.

Thunder Frosted Review

Okay I finally have some free time to review probably my favorite snus. Thunder Frosted.

This is a original portion snus that has 16mg of nicotine in it compared to the usual 8mg of the original sized ones.

Now when I opened the box that contained this snus along with many other flavors. I immediatly smelled mint upon opening the box. A strong mint smell. Sifting threw the cans I realized the good minty smell was coming from a black can that had the words Thunder written on it. Not a flash can but simple and sleek.

I have had some bad experiences with some other V2 flavors before so I was a little skeptical about this one. But I put all the bad experiences aside and opened up the can. A very strong spearamint smell came through. The portions were a little larger than most I have tried, they were also very moist. The most moist portions I have recieved to date.

I popped in a potion and was very surprised at the strong spearamint flavor that followed along with the strong nicotine buzz I got. The flavor is definatly spearamint and a pretty strong spearamint flavor at that. I must have kept that portion in for 2 and a half hours before taking it out and the portion was still very flavorful at that point. It was time for supper so I took it out to eat.

I decided to do a test with this one to see how long the flavor would last. Some people have reported up to 6 hours. I however have kept one in for 4 hours before the flavor went flat. One more thing about this snus is it does juice quite a bit. I suspect that is from how moist the portions are in the can.

This snus has become probably my favorite snus for many reasons. I only need like 3 portions a day. There is enough nicotine in them and flavor to last many hours. The flavor is just perfect in my opinion.

There is however one downside to this snus. The minty flavor does not go well with any drinks I have had with it. The minty taste mixes in with the flavor of the drink and makes a pretty bad combo in my opinion. So I usually just drink water when I have one of these in.

I would recomend this snus to anyone who has been snusing for a little while. The amount of nicotine that is in this snus may be to much for a beginner to handle. Unless they were a heavy dipper.

Why Snus Instead of Smoke.

I thought I would pass on a little wisdom on why I belive Snus is better than smoking.

The biggest reason I went to snus over smoking was the money saving. In this economy that we have right now here in the U.S. every penny saved really adds up. I was spending about $150.00 us dollars a month on cigarettes and that may be a little less than I actually spent.

Right now useing swedish Snus I'm only spending around 28 dollars a month.

Snus can also be used any where. On a plane, in a non smoking resturaunt, In a hospital, in a large amusement park that does not allow smoking. It is also very discreet, no more anti-smokers harrassing you for smoking near them even when you are outside.

No more having to listen to 5 different people a day tell you how bad smoking is for you.

You don't have to inhale smoke, and your clothes does not smell like smoke. You also don't have to spit in a bottle you are carrying around because it is totally smokeless and spitless.

Some of the minty flavored ones even freshen up your breath. Smoking never did that for me.

And to answer a question that may come from that last comment. No it is not overpowering in the sweet minty flavor like the Camel Snus is that is sold in the states.

Trying out all the differnt flavor is very fun too. I look forward to every order because there is always a new flavor that I haven't tried coming in my order. And there is also always a favorite flavor of mine. Thunder Frosted yummy good stuff.

Some brands and flavors actually have some pretty cool looking cans that I have started collecting. My wife doesn't like the idea of me saving the empty cans but I want to keep one of every flavor I have tried.

There are also some very nice communities of people out there that are willing to help you better understand snus and help you pick out the flavors that may suit you best. Unlike smoking most snus users don't have just one kind they stick with all the time. At least not in the states. In sweden A lot of the population uses General Brand exclusivly though.

I have been using swedish snus for about 3 months now and still not smoking and i'm already feeling better. I don't get so winded carrying groceries up 3 flights of stairs. Walking in the mall I don't start breathing heavy. I don't wake up coughing in the morning anymore.

Though I will admit my mouth is still a little dry in the morning but not as bad as it was when I was smoking.

When eating things your taste buds come back to life. The flavors come through much better. I can now pick out more flavors in my favorite food dishes that I never new were in them.

Snus also has a much lower amount of Tsna's than smoking or american dip does.

Swedish snus is treated like a food product in sweden so the Food and Drug Administration there monitors snus. Snus is said to be about 98% safer than smoking. Swedish snus is also no longer required to place labels on the can that say this product may cause cancer. Do you think cigarettes will ever not have to put that on the packs. I don't.

Most snus has about 5 ingredients. Tobacco, Water, salt, acidity regulator, and nicotine.

Can you tell me what all the ingredients are inside your favorite cigaretter or favorite Dip. I'm sure there is info out there with speculation but that info is not required to be released to the public by big american tobacco companies.

Catch Licorice

Time for another review this time on Catch Licorice white portions. Okay I'm not going to talk much about the can because it is the same as all the other catch brands except the color which is grey. It has the standard Swedish Match lid. When I opened this can up I could immediatly smell the Black licorice smell and it reminded me of the black jelly beans I used to enjoy so much as a kid. I thought for sure this one was gonna have a strong black licorice flavor because of the smell. Upon opening the can I noticed the portions are a little moist not super moist like the thunder frosted but not as dry as the Catch eucalyptus portions i have had. A better description would be the portions were damp. I slide the portion in and leave it on my tongue for a little bit to pre-moisten it. The flavor comes pretty quickly of a salty licorice. Neither flavor is really strong both pretty subtle flavors. The licorice flavor isn't sugary sweet like the jelly beans i used to enjoy so much, but it was still very enjoyable. The flavor lasts a good hour after that I mostly taste salt with a very very subtle hint of flavor. I kept the portion in for an hour and a half. This is another winner in my book from Catch I think I may like this one even more than the eucalyptus. The reason I think I like it more is because well no minty after taste just licorice and salt with a very mellow tobacco flavor. So there you have it my review on Catch licorice. I would suggest this one to anyone even to people who say they don't like black licorice because the flavor is so mild and blended so perfectly that they may very well enjoy it. As always snus on. General Onyx

Okay time for a review of what I consider a Premium snus.

The onyx came in the mail and the first thing I noticed about the onyx is the slick can it is very sexy looking, all black can with a silver top. One of the nicest looking can's I have in my collection.

Upon opening the can and taking a sniff the strong aroma of pepper tobacco and ammonia greeted my nose. Now this is defiantly one snus I would say if your a snube don't smell it until after you have already tried it. The portions are considered a white portion but are black and laid out in a fan shape inside the can. They are also formed into little wedges which is a very classy looking touch. This snus makes me think of the kind of snus the very rich would use because every last detail has been thought of to make a nice presentation from the looks of the can to the way they are fanned out on the inside.

Okay now on to the flavor. Popping the portion in I did not pre wet it as the portion was already pretty moist. Immediatly I started tasting the peppery tobacco with hints of lemon. The flavor was so smooth and blended together so perfectly, many have described it as a buttery taste. I have to agree with that statement. The flavor is among one of the best I have tried to date. Now the onyx is considered a strong snus having 11 mg in it instead of the normal 8.

The flavor was continual for about an hour and a half at that point it started to go flat and a little salty and bitter. This is a snus I have been using as my morning snus along with a can of Mt. dew. The dew and the onyx go together so well. The citrus in the Mt. Dew compliments the lemon flavor from the onyx very well.

This is a snus I would recommend to anyone because the flavor is so great and so smooth that I can't imagine anyone wouldn't like it. I have been using this snus every morning since I have gotten my first can of it. On my days off I usually pop in a second one of these after lunch.

So final thoughts are If you have not tried this snus put it in your next order and give it a shot It. Even if you don't like it the can is a must have for your collection if you keep an empty can of all the ones you have tried like i do any way.

Odens Kanel (cinnamon)

This is a very good snus I'm enjoying it very much. Let me explain why.

Okay so i got the can and was a little confused when i got it. I thought it was just a plain oden's because On the front it just said Oden's but as I was turning the can around to inspect it I noticed a little maroon bar going down the side that said Kanel in it. That is when I knew I had the right stuff.

So I opened the can and gave it a smell. (I smell every snus I like most smells of em.) And to my surprise again I could immediately smell cinnamon and a mild tobacco. So I was pretty satisfied that it would taste like cinnamon. The portions looked a little dry but some brands are just dryer than others. So I wasn't worried about it.

Now I pop the portion on my tongue and give it a little pre-moisture as I do with any portions that look a little dry. I immediately taste cinnamon Yummy. I than slide it into my snus pouch in my upper lip and give it a few minutes for the flavors to start coming out of it. I was very happy with the mild cinnamon flavor I got from this snus. Not overpowering at all. Tasted a lot more like the cinnamon I have in my spice rack than the candy cinnamon stuff. Which was a plus in my opinion. After about 20 minutes into the portion I started to taste a mild tobacco flavor which mixed in very nicely with the cinnamon taste I was so enjoying.

The flavor lasted about an hour maybe a little longer before all i could taste was salt and a faint hint of the cinnamon every once in a while. So I would say this portion Is good for a max of 1 hour in.

This is quickly becoming One of my favorite snus. I'm gonna have to order a Roll of this stuff as soon as I can.

The can was also kinda nice just black with a black embroider on the lid with the normal Oden's design.

So with my experience with Oden's cinnamon I would recommend this snus to anyone. I think this would be a great transition snus to go from the strong flavored snus before heading into the straight tobacco snus. The flavor is mild and you can taste the tobacco flavor in the background which blends very nicely.

Okay that is enough on this subject.

nostrommen Choclate Raspberry Los

Okay I have now had a few pris of this and wanted to write up a review because I am very much enjoying this stuff. This Is also my first experience with Los.

Now as far as the grind goes I would say kinda coarse it is not powdery so I would say it is proabably a coarser grind than some but I have nothing else to compare it to as this is my first los. So take my review on grind with a grain of salt.

So the can is really basic just black and plastic nothing impressive. I opened the can and the smell that came from it amazed me. It smelled like I just opened up a box of expensive chocolates that I bought for my wife on Valentines day.

The taste was very good and pretty long lasting I kept it in for an hour all three times and to my surprise my pathetic looking pris stayed together. The taste is really amazing It tasted just like one of those raspberry cream filled dark chocolates that you get in a box of chocolates. I was very surprised at this made my mouth very happy.

Now This was a pretty good experience with los for the most part. It is very messy as I don't have a primaster or an Icetool. The pris felt like it was falling a part to me and I expected a huge mess when I removed it but to my surprise the pris came out in one sold piece I guess it was just taking shape of my mouth is why I thought it was starting to fall apart.

Over all I really enjoy this snus I don't think i'm gonna be a huge los fan but The nostrommen flavors made me just have to try it out. So even if you have not tried los before I would say it is worth giving these flavors a try. I can't wait to try my mandrin and dark vanilla i got also. I have been told mixing the two together in a pris taste like a creamsicle and that excites me. I didn't believe it at first but after trying this first flavor I believe that it may just taste like that.

So the Pro's are Taste is amazing and it isn't a sweet choclate raspberry taste but a mild one. Very cheap snus compared to others.

The only con i have had so far with this is very messy to hand bake a pris. The snus does not stick together very well and took me a while to make it a solid pris. But i'm also new at hand baking.

Sorry for the long post but this was a first experience in los and had a lot i wanted to say.

Snus that is okay to smell.

Now on a forum over at SnusCentral.org There has been a lot of saying stop smelling the snus but I don't completley agree with this.  

 In my opinion there are a few that i have got and smelled right away that smelled great and tasted great. 

Some that smelled great and didn't taste great. But i thought i would start a list of snus i have tried that i believe are okay to smell even as a snubie.

First and foremost general mint mini this smells like a piece of peppermint. And kinda taste like one. I however will never order this again.

Catch eucalyptus. I think this one smells great and so doesn't my wife. This is also my favorite snus. Has a mint eucalyptus smell.

Catch vanilla/mint Another great smelling snus you can smell the mint and the vanilla. Also one I love to use.

okay i know catch is getting a little old for ones to smell but Catch licorice is also a great smelling snus IF you like the smell of Black licorice and only if you like the smell of black licorice. It smells just like the bags of black jelly beans i used to buy as a kid. This is also one snus I enjoy using. The taste is not as strong as the smell. 

Odens Kanel. Is one more i like the smell of smells pretty much like cinnamon. I smell this one everytime before i put it in. I also love the flavor of this snus one of my favorites. 

Ohh and one more i almost forgot to mention is Jac ice fruit. This one smells much better than it taste in my opinion. Almost like a freshly open pack of juicy fruit gum. This is also one i will not order again.

So far that concludes my list of Snus that is okay to smell even as a snubie. Other than that i have tried many other ones that i believe in not smelling. But these are the exception in my eyes.

If anyone else has any flavors that they think smell just as good as they taste list it here.

update on not smoking

Okay it has been about 2 months now that I have been using Swedish Snus.  I have also been smoke free for about a month. Things are going good i'm getting hardly any cravings for cigs at all now.

This has been great for me. I am already feeling better. While using snus is not 100% safe it is safer than using cigs. But the biggest advantage i find from using snus over smoking is my clothes not smelling like smoke. I can also snus any where that smoking isn't allowed so no matter where i am when a Nic craving hits I can just pop one in. 

It is a great alternative to smoking. I have been doing some research and will be posting up some more of the health issues and benifits of snusing over smoking. 

And it is better than american dip because you don't need to carry around a spit bottle to spit in. 

I'm just trying to inform other tobacco enthusiest about a better alternative to smoking and dipping.

Okay Review Catch chill mint vanilla mini.

Okay Time for my review on Chill Catch Mint Vanilla Mini snus. 

First off the can. 

It is smaller than the normal cans because it contains mini portions which have only 4mg of nic per portion. The can does have a nice design as do all Catch cans. Has a Standard ashtray lid. Over all i give it a 4 out of 5 for the can.

This snus is one of my favorite flavors. Upon opening the can it pretty much smells like mint and only mint. The portions are much smaller than the original portions and are also dry. But don't let the dry fool you because the tobacco inside the portion is still pretty moist. 

So I finally put one of these in and must say the mint flavor comes on right away. After a few minutes the vanilla comes into play as a subtle undertone to the mint. Now there isn't much tobacco flavor at all if any. There was absolutly no nic hit for me.

Now that being said I use this inbetween other portions as hold over for the harder hitting nicotine ones. 

Overall I really love this snus but I am dissapointed it will be discontinued at the end of may 2009. I'm going to go ahead and order a roll or 2 before the production stops on this one. 

Oh I almost forgot the flavor lasts about 45 minutes as with just about any mini i have tried. And the portion material is very comfortable on the gums. I just wish this came in a regular sized portion. 

So overall i give this snus a 4 out of 5 rating. The only reason it gets a 4 instead of a 5 is because it is a mini and well there just isn't enough nicotine in it for me. If a regular sized portion ever comes out of this than i'm sure it will get a 5 out of 5 from me. 

I would suggest this flavor to anyone but keep in mind if you really like it you may not be able to ever get it again if it isn't picked up at the end of the year as the most popular new flavor by catch.

Probe Whiskey Review.

I wasn't sure what to review first but since I have a Probe Whiskey portion in right now I thought I would give it a go.

Okay upon opening the can the portions were fairly wet. Which is a good thing in my opinion.

The next thing I notice is the smell is very sweet. You can still smell the tobacco but it is sweet. 

The pouch is the original portion so it is brown and moist. It does not irritate my gums at all.

Okay so Lets get onto the importat thing the taste. It is kind of hard to describe even as i have one in right now. I'm not really sure if i taste whiskey at all maybe Whiskey if you added a ton of sugar to it. It does however have a sweet smoked wood taste. My first inital impression was actually that of kool-aid brand hawaiian punch. But that faded quickly. 

Over all i think this is a decent snus not one i would use all day long but as a once in a while one after a large meal or if i'm in the mood for something sweet. 

However I do feel this Snus goes really well with a tall glass of fruit punch it seems to bring the flavors out very good. 

I would give this Snus a 3 out of 5 star rating. It is decent but not going to be in my regular rotation.

My first post woot

Well this is my first post on this blog and wanted to share with you my noob experience using swedish snus. 

I have been smoking for about 15 years now and had tried quitting many times but i'm just to addicted to nicotine.  I know what you are thinking the patch and the gum but none of that worked along with anxiety medicines. 

So one day i walked in a store and saw something by camel called Camel Snus. So i picked up a can and tried it. Upon opening the can it smelled like a container of gum or mints. I popped one in my upper lip and somewhat enjoyed the flavor. It did give me a pretty decent nicotine buzz by the way.

The best part was it was smokeless and spitless tobaco so no carrying around a spitoon or smelling like cig smoke.

This prompted me to read up about it on the internet and to my surprise when i typed in Snus on a google search nothing popped up for Camel snus. What i found instead was sites carrying Swedish Snus. Intrigued I started reading about it and found out it was much safer than smoking and that swedin where the highest amount of snusers live has the lowest rate of cancer in europe. So i ordered Two cans.

I got Gotenborgs Rape and energy snus. Got it and started using swedish snus which completley destroy's camel in quality and taste. 

And now i am smoke free and happily snusing.
